We recently got one of the VIAIR 88P Portable Air Compressors based on recommendations in these forums.  Already, it has proved itself.  On our recent outing my TV developed a leak in the right rear tire (I'm taking it in for repair today), and lost 20 PSI overnight.  The VIAIR 88P pumped the tire back to 44 PSI within minutes.  It's compact and ridiculously easy to use.  Needless to say, it's going to be in the TV from now on.  It came with a 16 foot air hose, but we also bought two more 6 foot hose extensions so we can use it on both the TV and TT tires.

Unfortunately, my VIAIR 88P seems to have died on me the second time I put it to use.  I was topping off the tires on my TV when the VIAIR made a phhht sound, and stopped pushing air.  I replaced the 20 amp blade fuse in the cord, but it still doesn't work.  I'm open to suggestions from anyone who knows more about these than I do.

I thought so too.  The VIAIR 88P gets great on-line reviews, and has gotten high marks from LOA members.  I was stumped when it died last Sunday.  I should have the replacement tomorrow, which is good since we're leaving on a 1,500 road trip to Texas with the TT.

Oh yeah.  I can't remember the last time I had to put on a spare.  Just plug the tire while it's still on your rig, inflate, and go.  Pretty standard repair here in Alaska, and for good reason. It works well.  A plug kit isn't likely to cost you as much as a single tire repair in a shop, yet it's good for many repairs.  Replacement plugs and cement are even cheaper and readily available.

Funny thing, for every tire of my own I patch, I do at least 4 or 5 repairs for others folks with flats found alongside the road.  Most notable repair was 2 flats at once on our 4-horse trailer.... With horses aboard.  Didn't even want to think about unloading 4 horses and corralling them while I jacked up the trailer, and I sure wasn't going to jack it up with restless 1300# horses aboard.

You'll be especially glad to have a plug kit if you ever have two flats at once, but only one spare!

I wonder if they will tell you what went wrong. Well I know ours is different, we have an onboard compressor, I like to run it once in awhile to keep the air pressure up and mechanically have things working. I don't know but I like getting all my mechanical stuff up to temperature once in awhile. Glad that you've had a good responce from the company.

Glad you had some good response.  We, too, have the Viair 88P based on LOA recommendations.  Just had to use it twice in the last couple of weeks on the TV (in the garage, not on the road!--due to tire installer error) and it worked great and faster than I thought it would.  Also carry, but not yet needed, plug kit.

Happy Trails.

How long have you owned yours?  How long between running it at purchase and your latest use?

I am very interested, but at the moment waiting for some time to pass (at least a few months) to see how Don's replacement works after some down time since his first one worked upon purchase, but then had trouble after sitting for a while (3 months).

I used the new one for the first time four days ago to top off the TV and TT tires, and it worked fine.  I'll post updates as I use it again.

Nice memory, great players.

Although I believe you meant "Nothing but net".

I can remember going to quite a few Warriors games where the home crowd was chanting "Air ball!" after yet another missed Warriors' shot.

You're probably right, I just remember if you made a hook shot from out in court and it swished through. You would lift your hands up and, go nothin but air, maybe that was being sarcastic.

"Joey: Wait a minute. I know you. You're Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Roger Murdock: I'm sorry, son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I'm the co-pilot.
Joey: You are Kareem! I've seen you play. My dad's got season tickets.
Roger Murdock: I think you should go back to your seat now, Joey. Right, Clarence?
Captain Oveur: Nahhhhhh, he's not bothering anyone. Let him stay here.
Roger Murdock: But just remember, my name is...
[showing his nametag]
Roger Murdock: ROGER MURDOCK. I'm an airline pilot.
Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense.
[Kareem gets angry]
Joey: And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs.
Roger Murdock: [breaking character] The hell I don't! LISTEN, KID! I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!"

We also were able to see the Oakland Raiders come and play our teachers and coaches in basketball,at SLV high. John Madden had a condo at the Boulder Creek golf course and the players would come and hang out with him. Those were some intense games, I remember Art Shell, who could hold the basketball with one hand, getting pissed off. He yelled and slammed the ball on the court, it bounced and hit the roof, very impressive.

Thanks for the updates Don & diamonds.

This just went from watch/wish list to cart.

I really don't know what happened with my first 88P (it died without warning the second time I used it), but VIAIR replaced it immediately, with no hassle.  The replacement is the one I have now.

Don

After our trip to Death Valley I decided it was time to replace my 30 year old compressor. It has served me well when called upon but didn't have the capability to inflate all four truck tires and therein was the problem.

When we tow we pump up the tires about 5 lbs over recommended pressure to accommodate the increased load. That works well on the pavement but when we went offroad with an empty truck, it made for a very harsh ride. I really wanted to deflate the tires but was concerned I wouldn't be able to inflate them back to where they needed to be for our trip home.

When we returned home, I did some research and settled on the Vlair 88p after reading all the reviews. It's small, quiet but seems to inflate much better than the 30 year old cigarette plug compressor it replaced. I've only been able to test it on a tire that was already inflated to 40 lbs and it pumped that tire up to 45 lbs in about 1 1/2 minutes. That should work well. It also comes with a much longer air hose and that was another selling point. Gotta be able to reach what needs inflating.
