It's a cheap USB 2.0 'thumb' drive. We have all our music, radio plays and spanish lessons on it.

It plugs into the dash on our tow vehicle, and the radio recognizes what it is, and knows what's on it, down to artist, album and track.

No more compilation CDs of mp3s, no more shuffling around trying to find *that* song. It's all there, on one little thumb drive.

We've used it a lot this trip, when we've been out of cellular data and radio range.

Love it

OK, then, I'll take you at your word that it is a question.

For the benefit of others, rather than you:

I've been using USB sh!t since forever. I'm a software engineer since around 1984. I've tried a bunch of different USB 'thumb' drives for this application, and none of them worked. I don't know why. I have an m-sata half terabyte SSD drive in a usb 3 enclosure which works just fine. Yeah, I know it won't do 'Trim', but that's fine, it's effectively read-only data. On the other hand, I tried a similar SanDisk 'thumb' drive to the one I'm advocating, and it didn't work.

My main point is that seriously large capacity 'thumb' drives are available for very little cost compared to only a few months ago. And they kind of change the game when it comes to enjoying stuff when on the move.

And only some of them seem to work OK. I pointed out one that worked for me.

We are technically challenged when trying to sort out this sort of thing, so appreciate your recommendation.  Would one of these also be appropriate to store photos off our Mac?  We just got more advanced cameras and want to be able to have a photo library on a storage device so we don’t tie up so much space on the laptop.  Preparing for a four-month trip in our Lance!

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt.  It really was just a question.  The original post, with no background info, made it sound as though it might be something new for you.  If so, I thought I’d throw out some other options but it looks like you’re covered.

As far as photo storage goes, a flash drive would certainly work (depending on number and size of photos) but it’s awfully susceptible to loss if it’s the only place your precious memories are stored.  Look into one of the cloud based photo storage solutions.  Since I have a Google phone, Google allows unlimited storage for free.  If you’re really into photography and have nice cameras, the paid version would be better as it allows original resolution.  There are plenty of other services out there that do the same thing.  If that doesn’t appeal to you I’d at least backup the photos to another local device.  Losing photos is heart breaking!

I (S) am not at all a fan of cloud based storage, especially, because a lot of the time we are not in places where cloud based storage is accessible. Big fan of store it locally, at least twice.

Technically, storing stuff on a thumb drive like this is a good first plan. It gives you options that are not obviously available on a Mac or a PC. But like DMC says, don't rely on it to be perfect. Store those unforgettable images somewhere else as well. Then you will be as cool as cool can be. For that second option,  Google Drive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive or even a local Network Attached Storage solution will take care of it. It's not hard, but there's a lot of jargon associated with it.

We combined all our music on one scandisk Cruiser Glide 3.0 (256GB).  Us two love birds of 37 years, have 180º out tastes.  She's younger and from the NW, I'm an older Texan.  She likes country, and I like anything that has a beat and makes you move.

We have a 2020 TT1985 with the Jensen A/V system.  Just plug the flash drive into the USB slot, select the mode, adjust the volume and salsa away!
