Just recently purchased a new Garmin 2797LMT with the 7" Monitor and thought I would share my personal review and list the Pro's and Con's based on the short time that I have been using it. Overall I am very satisfied with this unit.

PROS

Active Lane Guidance

Traffic Announcements

Ad free traffic

Next turn and the street you are on

Route selection option

7" Monitor is very clear and easy to read

Powered mount

Up ahead

Voice activation

Real Directions

School Zone Warning

Bluetooth

Smartphone Link

ecoRoute

Lifetime Maps and Traffic

Hope I didn't forget something

CONS

No manual is included in the box. Had to go online to get the manual.

Short USB cable

No soft case for storage.

Dialing out using Bluetooth only works with certain phones, wife's LG480 works but my LG500 does not.

REVIEW

A review done by GPStracklog sums up the unit quite nicely, the link is:

Thanks, Mike, for the excellent review.  I've been considering one of these but have been unable to get an answer to a question I have.  Hopefully you can help me.

When traveling in unfamiliar territory, I like to have the map showing.  No destination is entered, just like to see where we are on the map as we move along.  Additionally, the map must have a scale on the screen.  Does the Nuvi 2797 provide this?

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,
The map can be selected even when there is no destination entered. As for a scale not sure what you are looking for exactly, you may want to check the Garmin Forum at

Thanks, Mike.  Glad to hear that maps can be accessed without having to designate a destination.  Now to find out if the maps show scale.  Scale is essentially a ruler which shows distance on the map that correlates with distance on the ground.

Thanks for the link.  I will check it out.

Bruce,

I don't believe it has a scale, at least I have not found it anywhere to be selected when viewing the map, with all the features this unit has it may be hiding somewhere and I have not found it.

Yes, Garmins show map scale.  In map view, it's usually in the upper right or lower left.

I don't have the same model Garmin as Mike, but I've had three Garmins in the last 10 years and they all showed map scale.

The photo below is from my current Garmin, map scale is on the lower left.

Mike, good review.

Another nice feature of the newer Garmins is the improved satellite  reception.

I prefer to mount my GPS on the console between the two front seats, instead of the dash or windshield.  The newer Garmins work well when located away from the windshield.  With my old Garmin mounted on the console, I had to use an external antenna mounted on the dash, in order to receive the satellite signals.

Just came across two issues with the 2797, one being occasionally it will lose time and the other issue is that you cannot set the time to automatically update. I contacted Garmin and explained the issues and they had a few tests that they had me do to ensure there was a problem, after the tests failed they recommended it be returned for replacement. I am overall very satisfied with the 2797 and Garmin customer support was very helpful in checking the unit.

After three months with the Garmin 2797 I thought a posting of an updated review would be helpful. I did receive a replacement from Garmin back in December which has been functioning correctly with the correct time.

We have been using it extensively for the last three months and am very satisfied with the choice of the 2797LMT. Some of the major features we like with this unit are:

  • School zone notification
  • Traffic reroute
  • Smartphone link
  • Active lane guidance
  • Voice activation
  • Map selection when no destination is entered.

I have come to like this unit better than the navigation systems that came installed in our cars. The 7" monitor is definitely a big plus.
