The map can be selected even when there is no destination entered. As for a scale not sure what you are looking for exactly, you may want to check the Garmin Forum at

When traveling in unfamiliar territory, I like to have the map showing. No destination is entered, just like to see where we are on the map as we move along. Additionally, the map must have a scale on the screen. Does the Nuvi 2797 provide this?
