My BIL showed me something when we were camping together at Bodega Bay, a cool little step/stool that is extremely easy to deploy and is very small. I ordered one and was able to put it to the test last week when camping at Blue Lake.

The stool extends from 2.5 inches to 18 inches and can be set at any height in between. It is also rated to handle 397 lbs. The folded up size is a very small 2.5" x 9.8" making it easy to store. Here's some photos;

As one can see, it has a small footprint making storage easy. The second photo shows where I am storing it and the boots give reference to its actual size.

Here are just a couple uses I came up with for action photo opps.

And here's the true benefit for all who have E Bikes with pannier bags, it fits easily inside and becomes a carry along stool for sitting. This was extremely beneficial when I would have to ride 3 miles to "Signal Hill" where I could retrieve my emails and make phone calls. Sitting for the 45 minutes rather than having to stand made it much more enjoyable.

This stool is one of the better purchases I've made recently. It's small and extremely useful in numerous applications. The price is right and ranges from $19.90 for pink to $26.99 for grey. Here's the Amazon link;

Be sure to only use on a level surface.  I was sitting on mine on a little slope and it exploded.  Dropping me on my, well you should get the idea

Yes, that could be an issue. One thing they advertise in the Amazon link is this;

"2021 Upgraded Retractable Folding Stool, Portable Telescopic Collapsible..."

I'm curious as to whether your unit is older and maybe more susceptible to failure like you mentioned. The manufacturer sure wants folks to know this new stool is an improvement over past offerings, or so it would seem.
