You don't want a super aggressive rubbing compound, but with dirt embedded, has to come off somehow to get a good finish. I would not use 3M Perfect It Heavy Cutting Compound, for example. But a mild cleaner should be ok. Griots has an entire range of products, from very mild to moderate.
