Years ago, testing a 70 dollar inflator (Goodyear brand), I deflated a 17" dually tire flat to the ground and timed bringing it back to 80 psi.
It took over 20 minutes before the 80 PSI was reached. The 12v cigarette lighter plug got so hot it melted to wires going to it and burned up the receptacle, not to mention blistering my hand when I unplugged it.
A high dollar one ($200-300+) that clamps to the battery is not going to fall short if you intend on inflating anything larger than a SUV or trailer tire that operates in the sub-50 PSI range and isn't as large of a volume as the full-size truck tires. Otherwise, about any little compressor is fine if you don't expect it to do that.
